R&D expenditure in Lithuania among lowest in EU

R&D expenditure in Lithuania totalled 332 million euros last year, accounting for 0.95 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

In Latvia, the ratio was 0.6 percent and in Estonia, 1.74 percent. Across the EU, R&D expenditure accounted for 2.02 percent of the GDP.

Higher education sector last year accounted for 55 percent of the total R&D expenditure in Lithuania, which was the second highest rate in the EU after Cyprus with 57 percent.

Business enterprise sector accounted for 25 percent of the total expenditure, and the government sector – for the remaining 20 percent.
