“Up until World War Two, Vilnius was the centre of Litvak culture, known around the world. The saying that one has to go to Vilnius to receive wisdom was widely known among Jewish people. I am convinced that being proud of such a precious cultural gift of Jewish cultural heritage, Vilnius will wisely pass it over to the next generations. There are only two out of more than 100 synagogues remaining in Vilnius and they are a reflection of Vilnius Litvaks’ history, religion and culture. Therefore, we hope to preserve them as authentic as possible,” DCH director Diana Varnaitė was quoted as saying in a statement.
The department has allocated EUR 43,443 for the renovation of Vilnius synagogues this year, and the Jewish Community of Lithuania has contributed EUR 4,827.
