“You cannot plan far into the future because a four-year political cycle is just too short for some things to be implemented, so governments invest in what pays off in the short term,” said Žeruolis at a debate at the Vilnius Book Fair.
Žeruolis also said that Lithuanian politicians did not have the courage to admit they did not know how to solve some of the problems the State faced.
“I have not heard a [Lithuanian] politician who would say that does not know how to fix a problem,” he said, despite the fact he said that there were many complex problems with no simple answers.
Vitalis Nakrošis, another scientist at the Institute of International Relations, said that the key failure of Lithuania’s politicians was in failing to identify its most important strategic objectives, instead there was focus on competing with opposing parties.
“The conflict between the main political parties is constraining the progress, it prevents focus on policy implementation,” he said.
