The Russian government has decided to increase the tolls smaller trucks up to 12 tonnes will pay after a plunge of the ruble decreased flows into Russia‘s roads fund.
Carriers‘ union president Mečislavas Atroškevičius warned that the cost of more than €11 per day will be a heavy burden for small carriers.
Road taxes for larger semi-trailers had been introduced last year and the new taxes will not affect them. However, the new tax will hit smaller carriers hard.
Russia has included Lithuania and Latvia in a list of billable countries as a response to levies for Russian trucks previously introduced by these two countries, Russian media reported.
Previous agreements not to levy Lithuanian and Latvian trucks on Russian roads ended last year.
