At some education establishments, 100 percent of staff will go on strike which will, all in all, involve 5,000-6,000 people.
There are currently over 1,200 schools, excluding kindergartens, in Lithuania.
“It’s an indefinite strike. We wanted and hoped that, perhaps, the government would understand and we wouldn’t need to start the strike. But as we saw that the minister (of education – BNS) is totally incompetent and has not made any decisions and homework, so the strike will begin. We would like it to last as little as possible but since the government is acting like that, the strike might last for a week or two,” Navickas told a press conference on Monday.
Teachers demand a raise in the so-called student’s basket, funding per one student, the reduction of schoolchildren at schools and improved social guarantees for education workers.
Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says legal measures will be taken against education workers. “Legal experts will say what we should do in this case, so we will take legal measures,” he told journalist who asked him about possible response to the strike.
