US study finds growing plagiarism among Latvian scholars

Education Minister Marite Seile’s advisor Vjaceslavs Kascejevs says that the study focuses on the topic of plagiarism among scientists all over the world, and Latvia has been listed as a country where this phenomenon is particularly widespread. Latvia is listed among countries like Bangladesh, Belarus, Moldova, Colombia, Pakistan, and others.

“We must help expose those who feel no guilt about practising plagiarism and smearing the name of Latvian scholars,” Kascejevs said.

Meanwhile member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, Ivars Kalvins rejected Kascejevs’ statements, saying that possibilities of cheating are minimal.

“The possibilities to cheat or steal other scientists’ work are minimal. It takes five minutes to identify plagiarism,” the scientist said.
