The use of mobile electronic signatures is gaining popularity in Lithuania with over 110,000 people using the service in Lithuania at the end of 2015.
The number of certificates issued for SIM cards also surpassed chip cards and USB keys for the first time, data from the Lithuanian Communications Regulatory Authority shows.
The trend has continued in the first quarter of this year, with growth in numbers of mobile electronic signatures continuing to rise – state institutions, banks and telecommunications companies are seeing a consistent rise in usage of the technology.
“Currently it is safe, quick and efficient to sign in to cyberspace, so it is pleasing that the Lithuanians are discovering electronic identification and signature possibilities and are becoming supporters of this technology. It is also a signal that it is time to increase availability of state and local government electronic services – I hope that the popularity of mobile e-signature will encourage the further development of electronic services in the country,” said ICT sector INFOBALT Association Executive Director Paulius Vertelka.
This year mobile operators have recorded growth of about a third in the number of the service users in the first quarter of this year.
Mobile electronic signatures’ popularity is also growing in the financial services sector. Danske Bank products and channels development department director Benas Bagdonas said the number of transactions signed using the electronic signature in 2016 has grown by 130% compared to the same period last year.
