Lithuanian Ambassador to the Holy See Irena Vaišvilaitė said that these stamps will promote Lithuania around the world.
“This is the first case in the Lithuanian postal history where a postage stamp is issued in conjunction with the Vatican. The practice of postal services in two different states publish a joint stamp on an occasion is popular,” said Vaišvilaitė on Žinių radijas.
“Vatican stamps attract huge interest among philatelists. The fact that Lithuania will publish a stamp with the Vatican puts Lithuanian postage stamps into a broad global context, provides a visibility,” she said.
The Vatican has previously issued three postage stamps series to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the conversion of Lithuania to Christianity.
In the past, initiatives for the previous stamp series were driven by emigrant Lithuanians as the country was still under occupation.
