The runway of Vilnius Airport will be reconstructed fundamentally, both at the ground and undersoil levels. The runway was built in 1958 and last time reconstructed more than 20 years ago. The nature of the reconstruction prevents it from being carried out at nights without suspending flights and will take more than a month to be completed.

The reconstruction date was selected after evaluating various factors – most tasks require higher air temperature and no precipitation. Therefore, the analysis of meteorological conditions in 2012-2014 was conducted. It was determined that the fewest rainy days were recorded in the selected period of July and August. It was also taken into account that preparatory work will begin in spring and will take from 3 to 4 months to be finished without intervening with flights.

It is projected that between 14 July and 18 August 2017 Vilnius Airport will service 4,350 flights and over 400,000 passengers. 77 percent of flights and 90 percent of passengers are expected to be transferred to Kaunas and Palanga airports.
