A new modern bus station will be built in the territory of the railway station and the two stations will be connected with an underground passenger crossing. The new center, called Vilnius Connect, will house offices and the new headquarters of Lietuvos Geležinkeliai and might also house the municipal administration.

Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius and Lietuvos Geležinkeliai CEO Mantas Bartuška signed a letter of intent regarding planned changes in a territory of over 20 hectares.

“Historically, the railway station area used to be an industrial area and poorly maintained territory. We will change it beyond recognition. (…) It should become a place that attracts people, residents and invites tem to comfortably travel to neighboring regions. (…) We want that place to become modern,” Bartuška said.

“This project will bring other cities closed to the Lithuanian capital and will bring the capital to other cities,” Šimašius told a press conference.

According to Bartuška, it’s too soon to speak about the project’s costs. The project will also involve private companies, he said.
