A competition for the contract to build and run a multi-functional complex in Šeškinė area of Vilnius is to be launched on Wednesday.

The complex is to be constructed at the location of the failed National Stadium project. The project initiated by Vilnius municipality and the Department of Physical Education and Sport will be implemented in collaboration with private partners under the “Plan – Build – Finance – Manage” model, states the Vilnius municipality press release.

The complex is to be dedicated to fitness, education and culture. Plans include a 15,000-seat stadium, a sports museum, a kindergarten, three football fields, a track-and-field stadium, gyms, a library, an information centre as well as a culture and education centre.

“I welcome all potential investors to actively participate in the competition. I believe that this project has no precedent and will capture the imaginations of not only those in Lithuania, but also those abroad. Before announcing this important competition, the municipality and project organisers held public consultations with potential investors and Vilnius residents interested in the project. This helped us put together the terms for the competition that will help the multi-functional health, fitness, education and culture complex to become functional and to best serve the needs of the public,” said Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius.

The contract is expected to be made for a duration of 25 years, with ownership of the completed construction going to the Vilnius municipality. It is a unique project, the first of its kind in Lithuania. The total value of the project is to be €73.1 million, with €33.6 million coming from EU funds, €2.9 coming from the municipality and the remaining €36.6 million coming from the state budget. The contract would come into power in April 2019.
