Leškevičius’ candidacy was approved by the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday.
Leškevičius has been serving as Lithuania’s permanent envoy to the Council of Europe.
If successful, Leškevičius will replace Kęstutis Jankauskas, who is to head the European Union observation mission in Georgia.
Leškevičius is a graduate of the Philosophy Faculty at Vilnius University. He has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1996. He is married and has two children.
According to Lithuanian law, diplomatic representatives to foreign governments and organizations are appointed and dismissed by the president upon nomination of the government.
