“This is not about the lack of funds. This is about our inability to take what has been put on our plate. (&) The Ministry of Transport and Communications is directly responsible, the whole Government is directly responsible,” Grybauskaitė told journalists.

According to the president, Lithuanian Railways, which oversees the implementation of Rail Baltica, will have to prepare by October another project asking the EC for additional funding.

“To my knowledge there are no projects, the EC has not received anything, which means that we may lose even more funding,” said the head of State.

In June the EC allocated EUR 106 million for the laying of Rail Baltica track in Lithuania. However, the request to provide more than EUR 75 million for the signalling system was not satisfied. Without the adequate signalling system trains will not be able to exceed 160 km/h speed.

As reported, Catherine Trautmann, the European Coordinator for the North Sea-Baltic core network corridor, of which Rail Baltica railway line is a part, is arriving on Thursday. She will assess the progress on the project and prospects of providing additional funding.
