The president said that previously NATO was not that well prepared to defend the Baltic countries and Poland, but now it is.

NATO leadership also agreed on defensive plans that provide additional security measures in the Baltic region. Defensive plans will be constantly updated taking into consideration new threats. The commanders of NATO member states will meet in Vilnius in late September to discuss the implementation of defence plans.

Grybauskaitė said that all 28 countries of the Alliance are now committed to defend the region in case of a threat and do this immediately, in a matter of hours not days.

NATO also made a decision to establish a rapid-reaction force that would effectively respond to threats and would provide immediate military assistance. It was also agreed to improve readiness of the existing response forces.
