Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius met with Uber representatives for Eastern Europe on Friday. He said Lithuania’s laws were not entirely favourable for the service, but added that Vilnius could launch a pilot project and then talk to the government about amending regulations.
Uber, head-quartered in San Francisco, USA, operates in 60 countries, including neighbouring Estonia and Poland.
The company has developed a smartphone app that allows users to call up drivers who use their own cars to provide passenger transportation service. Taxi drivers across Europe, who see the app as a threat to their business, have held protests, demanding that the service be banned.
