The issues of party funding and transparency in Lithuania can be addressed by learning from successful models in other European countries, according to the acting leader of Lithuania‘s Liberal Movement.

“Lithuania needs to use the good experience of other countries to reach a more open, more accountable, more transparent functioning of the party,” said the acting Liberal Movement leader Remigijus Šimašius and current mayor of Vilnius.

The party‘s former leader Elijus Masiulas is currently under investigation for taking a €100,000 payment from leading Lithuanian business group, MG Baltic.

Sergei Muravjov, the head of Transparency International Lithuania said that modern society is becoming more demanding from politicians and political parties and so politicians must also look for ways to make parties more transparent.

European Liberal leaders met in Vilnius on Saturday and discussed transparency issues in politics.

Austrian Liberal Party NEOS Executive Secretary Feri Thierry, said that when reaching transparency, parties should not only publicize their financial data, but also directly broadcast major events and meetings, publicize their leaders‘ agendas, various letters and inquiries.
