Automatically lifting barrier gates – in the Gediminas Avenue

Automatically lifting barrier gates in Gediminas Ave
Vilnius city municipality

“We had to correct mistakes made 15 years ago. Lifting barrier gates installed back then operated for a mere five years, because they were destructed by improperly designed and installed water drainage under the barriers; their mechanisms were damaged and they oxidized. Having assessed the condition of the six lifting poles in Gediminas avenue near the Cathedral last spring, a decision was made to purchase a new road barrier gate system and to install an appropriate drainage system”, says Kęstutis Vaicekiūtis, the CEO of the municipal enterprise “Grinda”.

According to the CEO of the company carrying out the works, currently, the old no longer working barrier gates are being removed at the site, and then the drainage system will be fixed – here the soil is unable to absorb the water accumulating in the shafts quickly enough, especially in the spring, when the ground is still frozen. Having installed a proper drainage system, the water will not accumulate and will not damage the barrier gates.

Having built the lifting poles at the Cathedral by the end of the summer, the works will move to the following section of the avenue at V. Kudirkos Square, where building mechanical barriers is planned.

Traffic on Gediminas Avenue will be closed every working day from 7:00 p.m. till 4:00 a.m., and it will only be used by pedestrians and cyclists on weekends and holidays.
