“We will continue to stand by our NATO allies to promote security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe. Through the hard work of our men and women in uniform, Canada will continue to demonstrate the strength of allied solidarity in response to Russian aggression,” Canada’s Defense Minister Rob Nicholson said in a press release.
Currently, the air-policing mission is performed by British and Polish jets in Lithuania and Danish jets in Estonia. In addition to Canada, Portugal will join the mission in September to patrol the Baltic skies from Lithuania, while Germany will send its jets to Estonia.
Launched in 2004, the NATO air-policing mission was usually carried out by four fighter-jets, however, was stepped up considerably following the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
