It will be the first time that Canadian forces patrol the Baltic airspace. They will join the Portuguese Air Force which will be taking over NATO‘s Baltic Air Policing Mission from 1 September.
Portuguese Air Force F-16 jets are expected to arrive in Lithuania on 29 August, while the official changeover ceremony is scheduled for 1 September.
For four months, starting on 1 September, the Baltic airspace will be patrolled by Portuguese, Canadian, German and Dutch air forces.
Portugal and Canada will station its aircraft in Šiauliai, while Germany in Estonia’s Amari Air Base and the Netherlands in Malbork Air Base in Poland.
Currently, four Polish jets and four British jets are ensuring the security of the Baltic airspace from Lithuania.
