The Lithuanian Parliament has already agreed to consider personal income tax law amendment which would encourage employers to buy gym memberships for their employees.
According to the amendment, the expenses that an employer would spend to buy gym memberships would get tax exemptions. The amendment could come into force from the beginning of 2017.
Recent data show that once a year every tenth Lithuanian participates in at least one sporting event. “However, these statistics do not show the real situation. Typically, the number is determined by how many people have acquired gym memberships,” said Lithuanian Sport University chancellor Mindaugas Balčiūnas.
Just a little more than 2% of the population go to gym while the European Union average is 12%, he says.
