Ethnic minority schools staging protest in Vilnius

DELFI / Mindaugas Ažušilis

The rally organizers the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, a political party representing the country’s Polish speakers, say that Vilnius authorities “discriminate against ethnic minority education” and want to close down 12 schools and kindergartens.

Protest organizers say that Vilnius authorities “stall the accreditation of Vladislavas Sirokomlė Secondary School”, have “plans to take away the Joachin Lelevel Secondary School building in Antakalnis” and are attempting to “close down Polish and Russian education institutions”.

Last July, the Council of Vilnius made a decision to re-organize nine schools, offering education in Polish, Russian and Lithuanian, from ‘secondary’ to ‘basic’, which means cutting senior classes.
