The Belarusian national married a Lithuanian in the Netherlands and applied for residency in Lithuania, but was denied the permit. He then turned to a court which rejected his appeal, so is now filing a plea with Lithuania’s Supreme Administrative Court.
The information has been confirmed to BNS by Tomas Raskevičius, human rights coordinator at the Lithuanian Gay League. The gay couple avoids publicity.
At the end of May, a Vilnius court rejected the Belarusian’s appeal against the Migration Department‘s decision not to grant him temporary residence in Lithuania. Judge Bronius Januška then said that the foreigner’s appeal against the Migration Department had been dismissed as unfounded.
Under Lithuania’s law, a foreign citizen can obtain a residence permit in the country if she or he is married to a Lithuanian citizen. However, same-sex marriages are not recognized in Lithuania.
