DELFI / Tomas Vinickas

Every fourth stolen car seized by Lithuanian officers comes from Germany.

Over the first six months of this year the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officers seized a total of 60 suspected stolen vehicles.

Twenty-six or 43% of the stolen vehicles have been detained at the border with Belarus, 17 (28%) – at the EU internal border with Poland, 9 (15%) – on the border with Russia. Twenty-nine vehicles have been seized by border guards from drivers entering Lithuania, 27 leaving, and another 4 inside the country.

Among the detained vehicles Volkswagen is the most popular brand (8 cars), followed by BMW (7), Audi and Mercedes Benz (6 cars each).

The stolen cars were usually driven by Lithuanian nationals (20 cars), Belarusians (15) and Russians (13). Most cars (16) detained by the VSAT officers have been stolen in Germany.
