Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis, who was among the participants of the commemorative hike, said that the partisan war had helped Lithuania to survive and regain independence from the Soviet Union.
The hikers visited partisans’ bunkers and the graves of members of the Algimantas partisan district.
Partisan groups began to form in Lithuania in the late summer of 1944. The organized armed resistance against the Soviet occupation ended in the spring of 1953.
Among the three Baltic countries, the resistance was the strongest in Lithuania.
