Minister Skvernelis was pleased about active joint work and constantly strengthening partnership in the area of law enforcement. “Today’s situation dictates new strategic challenges, and we must pay particular attention to ensuring security of the state and EU external border, fight against propaganda and terrorist threats, to cyber security. The US experience in these areas is extremely valuable and useful for Lithuania,” minister underlined.
Ambassador McCarthy stressed great concern of the US government for border control in the region due to current geopolitical situation and would like to have more active cooperation in this area. According to the ambassador, the USA cannot allocate more significant aid of financial funds to this area because of the improved economic situation of Lithuania, but they are ready to contribute while arranging trainings and exchange of best practices.
The minister and the ambassador agreed to shape the concrete needs for trainings, to arrange possible training programmes and to explore possibilities for the US experts to come to Lithuania. According to Minister Skvernelis, the topics should be expanded, thus inviting both the officers of other services and colleagues from other Baltic States as participants.
During the meeting, the visit of the delegation of the US Department of Home Security which took place in Vilnius in the end of April was discussed as well. Its goal was to check how Lithuania implements requirements related to its participation in the US Visa Waiver Program.
The ambassador has noted that the US government attaches great importance to the Visa Waiver regime.
