Latvia declared independence twice. First, on May 4, 1990, it set a transitional period for its cessation from the USSR. However, after a failed putsch in August 1991, Latvia declared independence again on August 21, 1991.
Latvia is also preparing for centennial celebrations of its statehood. The modern Latvian Republic emerged in the wake of World War One in 1918.
The Latvian Institute has proposed the White Tablecloth initiative to encourage Latvians to celebrate national holidays with their families and communities. It starts today and will continue until November 2018.
