Lithuania prepares to mark 604th anniversary of Battle of Grunwald

All day various events will be held in the Palace of the Grand Dukes in Vilnius, while the culmination of the events will be a solemn commemoration of the battle in Vilnius Cathedral Square.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes invites visitors to see exhibitions, creative workshops and educative games. A film Žinomas Nežinomas Žalgiris (The Known Unknown Žalgiris) will be screened.

In the afternoon, in the courtyard of the palace, the brotherhood Viduramžių Pasiuntiniai (Medieval Emissaries) and soldiers of the Honour Guard Company will demonstrate medieval weapons and armour to visitors.

In the evening, the battle will be commemorated in Vilnius Cathedral Square. The Honour Guard Company will take part, a historic cannon will be fired by the General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion, the brotherhood Medieval Emissaries will re-enact the fight between Lithuanian soldiers Teutonic knights, mounted police will appear wearing ancient soldier clothes.

The historic victory in the Battle of Grunwald on 15 July 1410 stopped the invasion of the Teutonic knights and was a decisive event that helped consolidate the medieval Duchy of Lithuania.
