Lithuania to advocate for Crimean Tatar rights at UNESCO Executive Council

“First of all, human rights and the right to cultural self-expression and similar things, therefore, there will be continued attention on these matters, which we have also raised at the (United Nations) Security Council. More specifically, we will also focus on the rights of the Tatars of Crimea (…),” Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius told reporters on Monday.

“I would also highlight the continued work that started at the Security Council in New York – this is safety of journalists,” he added.

Other important issues in focus will include gender equality and protection of cultural valuables in conflicts.

Lithuania will be a member of the UNESCO Executive Council until 2019. The 58-country council is one of the main bodies of UNESCO.
