“The proposal came from the President’s Office that A1 level language teaching should be trimmed from three months to one, and we agree,” Social Security and Labor Minister Algimanta Pabedinskienė said at the government’s meeting on Wednesday.

Mean while, Education and Science Minister Audrone Pitrenienė emphasized that a month of initial language teaching may be not enough for all refugees.

“We agree that the education process should be intensified and compressed to a month, i.e., 96 hours, but please note that some of them who have been granted asylum are completely illiterate and are incapable of reaching the A1 level within 96 hours. If we do not envisage a possibility to repeat the teaching, we condemn them to remain illiterate,” said Pitrenienė.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius pledged to take note of the education minister’s remarks.

On the same note, join our initiative #RefugeesLT and help us to reflect on refugees integration into Lithuanian society.
