Lithuania’s agriculture attaché in Brussels says that the country’s dairy farmers can expect support from the European Commission, although there are no guarantees yet, LRT reports.
Karolis Anužis says that the decision should be clear after the meeting of EU’s agriculture ministers in late June.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius met with the president of the European Council last Friday. One of the issues discussed was the support for Lithuania’s dairy farmers who have been hit by the lull in global milk prices.
The country’s Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė has said that Lithuania cannot subsidize dairy farming from its national budget alone.
Estimates suggest that Lithuanian dairy markets would need €75 million to cover losses they sustained last year.
