Lithuanian Independence Act signatory Ozolas passes away

Ozolas, 76, was a Lithuanian politician, activist, writer and pedagogue and taught at Vilnius University. He had been a member of the Lithuanian branch of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1973 to 1990, and of the Lithuanian independence movement, the Sąjūdis Initiative Group, from 1988 to 1990. In 1988 he founded the nationalist Vilnija organization. He joined the Lithuanian Centre Union political party in 1993 and became its chairman. In 1996, he was elected to the Seimas and served as an MP until 2000.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said in his message of condolences that Ozolas was “one of the most prominent Lithuanian politicians who dedicated his life to the country’s struggle for freedom and well-being of its people”.
