The group addressed Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, asking to urgently begin the necessary procedures so that these groups be included in the list of international terrorist organisations.
“We must send a clear signal to terrorists that they will have to answer for killing innocent people in Ukraine. Now it is crucial for the EU not to remain only an observer of events after ceasefire talks failed and as soldiers and civilians are being killed every day, while terrorists are looking to increase their forces,” said Auštrevičius, Chairman of the group.
The group’s address emphasised that the inclusion of the so called Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics into the international list of terrorist organisations would be a significant step towards acknowledging the obvious fact that the Russian government is supporting international terrorism and thus violating conventions of the United Nations.
The group Friends of European Ukraine unites 48 members of the European Parliament, who represent 18 EU Member States and all pro-European political groups in the EP.
