According to preliminary estimations, in October alone 218,000 refugees made the Mediterranean crossing to Europe, which is by a quarter more than compared with September. Since the beginning of 2015, nearly 800,000 reached the EU.
“At the moment, the situation is chaotic. We still do not have fully functioning protection of the European borders, nor conclusive readmission agreements with all third countries,” the president said to the national radio LRT on Wednesday morning.
Grybauskaitė is leaving for Malta on a working visit on 11-12 November to attend an informal European Council meeting and an EU-Africa summit which aims to find more effective measures to stop the flows of illegal migration.
