Lithuanian president pledges more focus on ethnic minorities in eastern Lithuania

DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij

Speaking with journalists, the president said that “part of this region feels greater economic and social exclusion”, and more attention should be paid to prevent incitement of discord along ethnic lines.

“I am calling on the government to pay more attention to Eastern Lithuania and I will do so myself. (…) There needs to be more focus and investment into our citizens to make fewer possibilities for incitement of discord among Lithuanian citizens,” Grybauskaitė said.

Some politicians in Lithuania are concerned about the pro-Russian stance sometimes demonstrated by local authorities in the Districts of Vilnius and Šalčininkai that are majority-controlled by the Polish Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania party. The latter, however, has accused other political parties of failing to resolve issues important for ethnic minorities.
