According to the president, the Polish prime minister has perfect knowledge of geopolitical challenges and his opinion on Russia matches her own completely.

“I would like to confirm – and the 27 state leaders heard – that I totally support Tusk’s candidacy as he represents the new members, he’s a representative of our region and has perfect knowledge of our geopolitical challenges. Our opinions, especially on Russia, match completely, therefore, as I said, I support this candidacy,” Grybauskaitė said.

“Regarding Ms. Mogherini, I abstained for the reasons everyone is aware of. That was my position during the meeting of the European Council,” the Lithuanian president said.

Asked by BNS about the reasons behind her decision not to support the Italian candidate, Grybauskaitė mentioned her lack of experience and position regarding Russia. “They include the lack of experience, as she’s been foreign minister only for six months, and also her stance regarding Russia is also worth criticizing,” the president said.

There were previous reports in the Polish media that Grybauskaitė did not support Tusk’s appointment. According to EUobserver, the Lithuanian president was the only leader who abstained during the vote on Mogherini.
