Lithuanian Seimas ombudsman sends inspectors to refugee centre

After visiting the centre in Jonava district, central Lithuania, Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas said he had spotted several violations of human rights himself, for instance, sanitary facilities are equipped regardless of the religions of the inmates living there, information stands are missing or contain Lithuanian-language information only.

In a report on the human rights situation, the Seimas ombudsman recommended providing sanitary facilities that would meet the needs of different religions of foreigners, also noting that available rooms and general premises are not clean, the condition of some windows is inappropriate, the kitchen appliances are disorderly, some tableware and dishes are missing.

The Rukla Refugee Reception Centre has been advised to organize human rights training for its staff.

The centre accommodated foreigners who have been granted asylum in Lithuania.
