Organized by trade unions, the rally featured banners saying “No to serfdom at work”, “Liberalization of the Labour Code is a path to slavery”.
“We need respectable working conditions today,” Kristina Krupavičienė, head of the Solidarumas trade union, said addressing the rally. She called on people to resist “exploitation by employers”.
Rally participants say they oppose the proposed changes to the Labour Code, stipulating a longer working week, reduced social guarantees and a shorter annual leave.
The government says, however, that liberalization of workplace relations will help create more jobs and promote investment. Representatives of the government and employers believe that the existing Labour Code provisions are often ignored and promote under-the-table pay.
