A number of voters, however, would like to see other politicians in the position, with Liberal MEP Antanas Guoga coming in second (10.8 percent), followed by Order and Justice party chairman Rolandas Paksas (9.8 percent), MP and leader of the opposition Liberal Movement Eligijus Masiulis (9.2 percent), according the survey by the Vilmorus pollster for the Lietuvos Rytas daily, carried out this summer.

“The person who is now prime minister is usually seen by the majority as the most suitable for this position,” political scientist Tomas Janeliūnas commented on the results.

He believes that Butkevičius, who is seen as competing for popularity with President Dalia Grybauskaitė, has had favourable conditions for gaining public popularity as his term escaped an economic crisis and any major scandals.

The survey also shows that 8.1 percent would like to see Zigmantas Balčytis as prime minister, followed by Labour Party leader Valentinas Mazuronis (7 percent), Ramūnas Karbauskis (6.2 percent), Gabrielius Landsbergis (5 percent) and Viktor Uspaskich (4.9 percent).
