Lithuania’s MFA says treaty between Russia and South Ossetia has no legal value

“In the view of announced signature of so-called “treaty” High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated that it “clearly violates Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles of international law and the international commitments taken by the Russian Federation, including the 12 August 2008 Agreement and its Implementing Measures of 8 September 2008 and has no legal standing”. The high representative stressed that “the signature of this document on the very day of the 31st round of Geneva International Discussions creates circumstances that do not foster a constructive climate for efforts to improve the security and humanitarian situation on the ground,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“In this context Lithuania reiterates its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. Like the previous agreements between Russia and Georgian regions of Abkhasia and South Ossetia, this “treaty” has no legal force. It severely harms international efforts for peaceful resolution of the conflict and has a negative impact on the security situation in the whole region. Geneva International Discussions remain the sole format for ensuring security and stability and reaching for peaceful resolution of the conflict,” the statement of the MFA read.
