New SocMin proposes to change refugee reception rules

“They (Estonians) do not move (refugees) to an intermediate center. They move them directly to municipalities. They (Estonians) rent housing for them and move families in. And they (refugees) stay in Estonia. They are leaving Latvia, which has a center similar to our Rukla, just like they are leaving our country,” he told a group of lawmakers on Friday.

Kukuraitis thinks that priority should be given to providing housing to refugees in areas outside of major cities and towns.

Lithuania has until now taken in almost 200 of the 1,105 refugees it has pledged to accept under the EU resettlement program. Several tens of the relocated people have left the country.
