Number of at-risk families down 38% in Lithuania

The number of at-risk families in Lithuania has gone down significantly over the last decade, data from Statistics Lithuania suggests.

In 2005, there were estimated 16,000 at-risk families in the country, while in late 2015 the number stood at 10,000.

There are also fewer children raised in at-risk families.

Specialists say that the decline has to do with services intended for such families. More social workers are working with such families, there are more day centres for both children and their parents.

However, adoption has also gone down over the last decade. Most children who need foster care currently live in municipal foster homes.
