Sixteen EU countries have already supplied Lithuania’s State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) with data about assets held by Lithuanian nationals, LNK TV news programme reported on Thursday.

The tax authority has inspected some 100 owners of real estate abroad and some of them raised red flags.

“We are going to initiate control action in regard to these individuals – we will approach them and investigate what funds they could have used to acquire the assets,” said Vaimira Jakienė, Control Department head at the VMI.

So far, no one has been prosecuted for illegal enrichment in Lithuania, since lawyers disagree on how to apply the law and the presumption of innocence. The Constitutional Court has been asked to rule on the matter.
