PM says new markets for Lithuanian food exports will be found this year

DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij

The prime minister says that immediate changes are impossible and hopes that new markets will be found already this year – in two to three months. He says discussions are underway with leaders and Government representatives of certain countries, but they are not made public.

According to the prime minister, Hong Kong has already opened its doors to Lithuanian products and it can be used as an opportunity to enter new markets. A meeting has been scheduled with the ambassador of South Korea next week. Ties have become stronger with Japan – a meeting with the Japanese prime minister has been scheduled for October in Milan. In addition, the Lithuanian delegation will travel to the United States to facilitate conditions for food product export.

“We are working very intensively, we did not prepare for this nor expect such challenges,” said Butkevičius.

The prime minister was asked about aid to agricultural producers. He said that assistance that was planned to be paid out in 2015 will be distributed this year. However, these appropriations will still be reinstated in 2015. Aid will first of all be distributed to dairy and meat producers.
