Speaking on Žinių radijas, Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis said the flow of migrants and refugees could now seek to find routes into Europe through the Baltic States, but he claimed that the Lithuanian border service was ready to deal with any influx.
“Our country is preparing for such eventualities. There are a variety of exercises, the border guards are simulating various situations together with the army. The results show that the Lithuanian-Belarusian border is secure on both sides and we can see how many are detained for trying to illegally cross Belarus-Lithuania border,” he said.
Slovenia announced on Wednesday that it would only allow only those who are clearly in need of humanitarian assistance, or intend to apply for asylum in Slovenia into the country.
Skvernelis said in case of a major influx of migrants at the border Lithuania could also rely on its European partners in dealing with the issue.
“Our officers have been helping the Slovenian colleagues to deal with illegal migration for almost six months. By behaving responsibly and in solidarity with the European countries that currently face influxes of migrants, we can expect similar aid,” said Skvernelis.
