The European Commission forecasts that by 2020, the shortage of IT specialists in Lithuania may reach 10,000 and with that figure reaching over 900,000 across Europe.
“Very soon Lithuania may run out of specialists in relatively new areas like data analysts, which currently is a very popular specialization – the need for them in the past five years has increased 3.5 times globally, and it is predicted that this trend will continue,” said Paulius Vertelka, the executive director of the Information Technology Association Infobalt.
According to Mr. Vertelka, currently the most needed are Java and .NET programmers, but a programmer usually has to have knowledge of a number of different environments, including Javascript, PHP, Ruby, mobile platforms like iOS or Android, cloud environments, and database applications from MySQL and SQL Server to Oracle and MongoDB.
Nevertheless, there will also continue to be great demand for other IT-related roles including project managers, user interface designers and other technical specialists: systems administrators, data analysts, e-commerce and web development specialists.
