Lithuanian view: What to expect from Russia in 2017?

2017 could be the year of Russia’s return – the signs of this were discussed in a Tuesday afternoon discussion organised by the the Eastern Europe Studies Centre (RESC) and VU TSPMI. The political scientists discussed the topic of “What will decide Russian foreign policy in 2017?” It is likely that the government rotation of the West, the resolution of the stalled Syrian conflict and strategic changes to the Russian tone will open opportunities for de-escalation and Putin’s return as a figure that is repulsive for many, but at the same time – an inevitable partner in resolving questions in the international political arena. Adamkus – any pandering to Russia would be political suicide for Trump

Donald Trump‘s victory in the US presidential elections left the world shocked. Few believed it and most were disappointed. British and other European media describes this as the greatest mistake of the American electorate in history because the real estate magnate is seen as a liar, bully, populist and has gone bankrupt a number of times. What can we expect after Trump‘s victory? LRT spoke with former Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, first post-independence head of state and one of the leaders of the independence movement Prof Vytautas Landsbergis, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius. Opinion

Gorbachev had to have known about the January 13 Vilnius assault

I read with interest the BNS October 17, 2016 article, published in the EN.DELFI by the Lithuania Tribune “Lithuanian court rules to question Gorbachev in coup trial” as my Ph.D. in history research at the University of Tartu, Estonia is on “Why the Soviet use of Coercive Force in the Baltic Republics Failed in 1990-1991 and Led to the End of the Soviet Union.” The most important part of this BNS article was not the headline of the Lithuanian court ruling to request the questioning of Gorbachev, which will never happen. Rather, the statement that “…Lithuanian prosecutors said that the available evidence did not lead to a conclusion that Gorbachev was aware of the intended military action and failed to take measures to prevent it.” […]

Lithuanian government must halt Belarus nuclear plant, say former heads of state

Two former Lithuanian leaders – ex-president Valdas Adamkus and the country’s first post-independence leader Vytautas Landsbergis – have urged the government “to do everything in its power to immediately halt the construction of the Astravyets nuclear power plant” in Belarus some 50 km east of Vilnius.
