Ukrainian and EU parliaments ratify Association Agreement

Members of the European Union and Ukraine’s Supreme Rada endorsed the 1,200-page document outlying political and economic cooperation.

However, the implementation of free trade rules outlined in the agreement, signed by EU and Ukrainian leaders several months ago, has been delayed until 2016 upon Russia’s insistence.

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement was drafted last year, but the then president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, pulled back just days before the planned signing last November in Vilnius. The move sparked mass protests in Kiev as many pro-western Ukrainians saw it as Yanukovych bowing to pressure from Moscow.
