Vice minister of foreign affairs proposed as Lithuania’s new ambassador to US

Kriščiūnas, 44, should be appointed to the post as of August 3, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a draft governmental resolution.

Incumbent Ambassador Žygimantas Pavilionis will be recalled from the post on July 30.

Kriščiūnas took the post of foreign vice-minister in the end of 2012 after serving as finance vice-minister for three years.

In 1993-1998, he worked at the Foreign Ministry’s Economic Department, working at the Lithuanian Embassy in the US in 1998-2001, at the Finance Ministry in 2001-2004 and as secretary at the Finance Ministry in 2004-2009.

In Lithuania, ambassadors are appointed and dismissed by the president in response to the government’s proposal and approval from the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.
