“As instructed in court rulings, the houses will be demolished,” Paluckas said on Monday.
One house will be torn down as soon as the family that occupies it moves out so as to avoid others moving in, he added.
“We have agreed with the Roma community that one building will be torn down to avoid abuse and the municipality being terrorized by new occupants of the vacated buildings and human rights defenders saying again that we cannot touch them,” Paluckas told BNS.
The municipality has been working for nearly eight months on the Roma integration program which, among other things, foresees employing two full-time social workers at the settlement.
Lithuania’s Roma community numbers about 2,100, according to the 2011 census.
