9 Lithuanian companies cleared to import meat to USA

“I am very happy to see concrete steps taken by the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture so that promises to allow imports of Lithuanian meat products are fulfilled. All nine meat processing companies which intend to offer their beef, pork, and veal products to the US market have been granted a permit for production exports from Lithuania. This is a great achievement of our Government, Lithuanian institutions and diplomats,” said Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.

Egidijus Mackevičius, head of the Lithuanian Meat Processors Association, told the Žinių Radijas radio that it was a significant milestone for Lithuanian companies, but they still need the final US product certificates.

Mr. Mackevičius said that “a new market has been opened which represents a huge alternative to Russia“.

Mr. Mackevičius noted that the new market will stimulate Lithuanian meat production and create new jobs.
